Yamachan's main competition in the tebasaki contest — Furaibo opened in 1963, two years before Yamachan, and many Nagoyans will tell you their wings are better (more savoury, less sweet, drier finish). Founder Hideyoshi Wani's recipe involves a longer marinade and a higher-temperature fry, and a side of the house's chunky pickled cabbage. The chain has branches across Japan; the Sakae location is the original.
Comparing Furaibo and Yamachan on consecutive nights is a respectable Nagoya project for any serious eater. About the same price point — a dozen wings and a beer for around 2,000 yen.
