Handayama Botanical Garden climbs a hillside north of the centre, with greenhouses, seasonal flowers, and views back over Okayama. It is not essential on a first visit, but it is a pleasant escape if you want something quieter than the castle district.
Spring blossom and autumn colour are the strongest seasons. The slope means comfortable shoes are a better idea than dressy ones.
