Asia > Japan > Nagi
Nagi is a small rural town in northern Okayama Prefecture, below Mount Nagi and away from the usual Setouchi art-island route. It clears the bar because its main museum is not a token local gallery: Nagi MOCA is a purpose-built fusion of architecture and contemporary art, with spaces designed around permanent works and the mountain landscape.
The town's other anchors are quieter but real. Bodaiji's ginkgo is a huge national natural monument tied to the monk Honen, and Mount Nagi gives the town its skyline and hiking identity. If you catch Yokozen Kabuki during a performance season, the case for visiting becomes much stronger.
Nagi is not a place to add casually to a first Japan trip. It makes sense if you are already in Tsuyama, Mimasaka, or northern Okayama and want a half-day or full-day detour with a clear art-and-mountain character.
