Tsuwano

Small Shimane castle town with an Inari shrine, mountain ruins, and red-tiled streets.

Tsuwano is a small castle town tucked into the mountains of western Shimane, often called a little Kyoto for its red-tiled roofs, temple lanes, and old samurai quarter. The comparison is generous, but the town has real charm: canals with carp, quiet streets, and a shrine path that climbs through vermilion gates above the valley.

The best day here starts at Taikodani Inari Shrine, continues up to the Tsuwano Castle Ruins, and then drops back into town for the old lanes around Tonomachi. The scale is gentle, but the setting is strong.

Tsuwano is worth the detour for travellers moving between Yamaguchi and the San'in coast, especially if you like small towns where the main reward is walking slowly rather than checking off a long list of sights.
