The Garan is the original temple complex established by Kukai in the ninth century — a wide open precinct containing the most important religious structures on the mountain. The Konpon Daito, a 48-metre vermilion pagoda representing a three-dimensional mandala, is the visual centrepiece of Koyasan and visible from much of the town. The Kondo, the main hall, was rebuilt in 1932 and houses important ritual events. Wandering the complex — especially in the early morning before crowds arrive — gives a good sense of the scale of Kukai's original vision for this mountain monastery.
