Muryokoin Temple

Tranquil temple garden with views of the Garan's vermilion pagoda

Muryokoin is one of the quieter temples on Koyasan, often bypassed by visitors rushing between the two main complexes. Its garden is modelled on the famous Phoenix Hall garden at Uji's Byodoin, and is designed to frame a view of the Garan's Konpon Daito pagoda in the distance — a piece of landscape choreography that rewards a slow walk around the pond in the late afternoon light.

The temple itself dates from the early Edo period and belongs to the Koyasan Shingon sect. It offers shukubo (temple lodging) accommodation, which means guests can eat shojin ryori vegetarian cuisine and join morning prayers. This is one of the more affordable shukubo options on the mountain. The garden is freely accessible and at its best in the maple season of late October and early November.
