Lake Chūzenji

Lake Chūzenji sits at 1,269 metres altitude, reached from Nikkō town by the famous Irohazaka switchback road — 48 hairpin bends named after the 48 syllables of the Japanese iroha poem. The lake was created when a volcanic eruption from Mount Nantai blocked the Daiya River valley, and it sits in a horseshoe of forested mountains that gives it a distinctly alpine feel despite being in the Kanto region.

The lakeside is lined with small hotels, souvenir shops, and restaurants. Walking or cycling along the shore is pleasant in good weather, and rental boats are available. The Futarasan Shrine has a branch at Chūzenji village on the south shore. In autumn (late October to early November), the surrounding forest turns vivid red and gold and the lake becomes very popular — arrive early or stay overnight to avoid the crowds.
