Umagase

Clifftop walk to the most dramatic basalt headland on the Cape Hyuga coast.

Umagase is the strongest viewpoint on Cape Hyuga. A short paved path leads through coastal forest to lookouts over steep columnar cliffs, dark water, and the ragged Pacific edge of Kyushu.

The walk is easy until the final rougher stretch, and the reward is immediate. Go in clear weather if you can; the coast looks best when the sun catches the rock faces and the sea below is moving hard.

A story
The name Umagase means "horse's back", a good description of the narrow ridge of rock that pushes into the Pacific. The cliffs are part of the Nippo Coast, where cooling lava fractured into columns before the sea began carving it apart.
