Kashima sits in southern Saga Prefecture, between low hills and the tidal flats of the Ariake Sea. It is easy to confuse with the more famous Kashima in Ibaraki, but this one has its own strong mix: a spectacular Inari shrine, an old sake-brewing district, and a local willingness to turn mud into a festival.
The headline sight is Yutoku Inari Shrine, one of Kyushu's most photogenic shrine complexes, with vermilion buildings climbing the hillside above a small valley. Lower down, Hizen Hamashuku preserves the feel of a post-town and port that grew wealthy on sake and traffic along the old Nagasaki route.
Kashima is not a big-city stop. It works as a focused day from Saga or Nagasaki, especially if you combine the shrine with the sake streets and, in late spring, the muddy oddness of the Kashima Gatalympics.
