Asia > Japan > Kyushu > Arita
Arita is the pottery town that gave Japan its first porcelain. The surrounding hills supplied the porcelain stone, Korean potters brought the know-how in the early 1600s, and Arita ware later travelled abroad through the port of Imari so widely that the two names became tangled.
The town is small, but it has a strong reason to exist on a travel map. Kyushu Ceramic Museum gives the history proper weight, Tozan Shrine turns porcelain into sacred architecture, and the lanes around Kami-Arita still feel tied to kilns, galleries, and family workshops rather than generic souvenir shops.
Arita works best as a slow day from Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Takeo, or Sasebo. Come for the ceramics, leave time to wander the old pottery district, and do your shopping after you have seen the museum so the patterns and glazes make more sense.
