Aqaba Church

Early Christian archaeological site often cited among the world's oldest known church buildings

Aqaba Church is easy to miss in a city better known for diving, ferries, and the desert road to Wadi Rum. The remains are modest, but archaeologists have identified the site as an early purpose-built Christian church, dating from the late Roman period.

It is worth a short stop if you like the layers of Aqaba beyond the beach. The site helps connect the modern port to the older Red Sea trade routes and religious communities that passed through this narrow corner of Jordan.
