Night Market

Every evening, the main street of the old town — Sisavangvong Road — closes to traffic and fills with stalls selling handicrafts, textiles, and souvenirs. The Luang Prabang night market is one of the better craft markets in Southeast Asia, with genuine quality among the tourist tat: hand-woven silk and cotton scarves, mulberry paper products, silver jewellery, indigo-dyed cloth, and bamboo basketware.

The market runs from roughly 5pm to 10pm every night. Prices are negotiable but Lao vendors are generally not aggressive hagglers — a 10 to 20 percent reduction from the asking price is usually achievable with good humour. The selection of textiles is particularly good: look for pieces made by the Hmong and Akha hill tribe communities rather than the mass-produced items that are also everywhere.
