B018

B018 is Beirut's most famous and most architecturally singular nightclub. Set into the concrete of a former industrial wasteland in Karantina, you enter through a steel hatch and descend into a low-ceilinged bunker with coffin-shaped seats, a mirrored ceiling, and a wraparound bar.

Music runs late and loud — electronic for the most part, with house, techno, and the occasional live set. The roof opens after midnight to reveal the city's skyline above the dance floor. It is not for the easily intimidated, but it is one of the great clubbing experiences in the region. Dress reasonably and arrive after 1 AM.

A story
The club's site was the location of a 1976 massacre during the civil war. Architect Bernard Khoury designed it half-buried in the ground as a deliberate underground bunker, with a retractable roof that opens to reveal the night sky at dawn.
