Byblos concentrates most of its interest in a small area around the ancient ruins, the Crusader castle, and the old harbour. The archaeological site alone contains temples, tombs, and fortifications spanning 5,000 years. A full visit to the ruins combined with the castle and harbour can take a half-day; the old souk and seafront restaurants extend it into a full day. Most visitors come as a day trip from Beirut, but the town rewards staying overnight when the day-trippers are gone and the old streets quiet down.
