Nam Heong

The most famous of Ipoh's three side-by-side white-coffee kopitiams, all on the same corner of Jalan Bandar Timah — Nam Heong, Sin Yoon Loong and Thean Chun. Nam Heong does the local breakfast of white coffee (roasted with palm-oil margarine and served with condensed milk), kaya toast (butter and coconut jam on charcoal-grilled bread), and a couple of fried eggs.

For lunch, vendors at the back of the shop sell chee cheong fun (rice noodle rolls), dim sum, and wantan mee. Get a window seat, watch the Old Town wake up, and order at least one of everything. Open from 5:30 a.m.; closed by mid-afternoon.
