KL's Little India: saree shops, banana-leaf rice restaurants, and the Sri Maha Mariamman temple

KL's Little India, a few hundred metres south of KL Sentral station, where saree shops, gold jewellers, flower garland sellers, and South Indian banana-leaf restaurants run for several blocks along Jalan Tun Sambanthan. The neighbourhood was originally the brick-firing yard that supplied the city's rebuilding after the 1881 fire — hence the name — and was settled by Tamil railway workers under the British. It is still the cultural heart of KL's Tamil community.

The food is the reason most visitors come. Vishal, Sri Nirwana Maju, and Saravana Bhavan are the names to know for vegetarian banana-leaf rice (around RM 15 for unlimited refills). The neighbourhood is liveliest during Deepavali in October–November, when the streets are decorated with kolam rice-flour patterns and arches of marigolds. Brickfields station (KTM Komuter) and KL Sentral both put you on the doorstep.
