Royal Selangor Visitor Centre

Flagship factory of the world's largest pewterware maker, with hands-on casting and engraving workshops

The flagship factory and showroom of Royal Selangor, the world's largest pewter manufacturer. Founded in 1885 by a Chinese tinsmith newly arrived in the Selangor tin-rush, the company has been turning Selangor tin into hand-finished pewter ever since. Free guided tours every fifteen minutes walk you through the workshop floor — casting, hammering, polishing — and a small museum displays historical pieces, including the world's largest pewter tankard.

The on-site School of Hard Knocks is the popular extra: for a small fee, you spend half an hour hammering a small pewter bowl into shape and take it home. There is, of course, also a large showroom and gift shop. Open 9 am to 5 pm daily. Located in the Setapak Jaya industrial area about 5 km north-east of central KL; easiest by Grab.
