Karst Cycling Circuit

Hpa-an's landscape is best experienced on a bicycle. The surrounding plain is completely flat, the distances between sites manageable, and the roads quiet enough to ride at leisure. Bicycles are rented from guesthouses in town for a few dollars a day; most guesthouses also have printed maps of the main circuit.

The classic route leaves town early, loops south past Linno Cave and the karst formations, circles through the rice paddies to Kawgun Cave, then continues to Yathaypyan Cave and the trailhead for Mount Zwegabin, returning to town as the bats are emerging at dusk. The whole loop is about 50 kilometres. Motorbike taxis and tuk-tuks are available for those who prefer not to cycle, and some guesthouses arrange shared jeep tours that cover the same ground.

A story
The cycling circuit that most travellers do in a day takes in Shweyinhmyaw Pagoda, Kawgun Cave, Yathaypyan Cave (with its bat flight at dusk), Zwegabin trailhead, and several smaller cave pagodas — roughly 50 kilometres of flat roads through rice paddies with karst formations rising from the plain at intervals. The combination of sacred sites, wildlife spectacle, and landscape cycling makes it one of the best day trips in Myanmar.
