Kyauk Ka Lat is a narrow limestone pinnacle rising 60 metres from a shallow lake on the southern edge of Hpa-an, with a small pagoda perched on its summit. It is one of the most striking natural features in the immediate vicinity of town — the combination of the near-vertical rock, the monks' dwellings carved into the cliff, the golden stupa at the top, and the still water reflecting all of it below is the kind of image that defines a destination.
The pagoda is accessible by a stairway cut into the rock and is an active monastery. The surrounding lake and rice fields make for excellent late afternoon photography. Kyauk Ka Lat is about 3 kilometres south of Hpa-an centre — close enough to cycle or reach by motorbike taxi — and is usually combined with visits to the nearby Shweyinhmyaw Pagoda and the lake at Kan Thar Yar.
