The original Pokhara settlement, several kilometres north of the Lakeside tourist strip and the area travellers most often miss. Bagar, together with the adjacent Bhairab Tole and Mohariya Tole, dates back at least 250 years and was a major staging post on the old Tibet-India trans-Himalayan trade route.
The narrow lanes still have Newar shopfronts, painted woodwork, and corner shrines; the central temple of Bindhyabasini sits on a small wooded hill above. Spend a couple of hours walking through the old bazaars in the morning before the heat builds. Best reached by taxi from Lakeside (about 15 minutes); local buses also run.
