Pokhara is about the outdoors. Day hikes lead up to hilltop viewpoints — Sarangkot for sunrise on the Annapurnas, the World Peace Pagoda for an afternoon climb above Phewa Lake — and the lake itself is the focal point of the city, with doonga rowboats, the island shrine of Tal Barahi, and an old town a few kilometres north of the new tourist strip. For travellers not heading into the mountains, the International Mountain Museum is the best single place in Nepal to learn about the Himalaya, while the Gurkha Memorial Museum covers the Gurkha regiments' two centuries of service. The Annapurna Natural History Museum and the spectacular Davis Falls sinkhole round out the half-day options on land. From the sky, Pokhara is the world's tandem-paragliding capital — the launch from Sarangkot and landing on the lakeshore is one of the great accessible adventure activities anywhere.
