The hills around Pokhara are the traditional Gurung and Magar recruiting ground for the Gurkha regiments, who have fought in every major British conflict since 1815 and now also serve in the Indian and Nepalese armies. This small but unusually well-presented museum lays out the history with uniforms, weapons (including a wall of kukri knives), photographs and personal effects.
The collection covers the great campaigns — Crimea, World Wars I and II, Borneo, the Falklands, Afghanistan — and the citations for the 26 Victoria Crosses won by Gurkha soldiers. Staff are often retired Gurkhas themselves and happy to talk. Located near the British Gurkha camp on the northern edge of town; modest entrance fee.
