International Mountain Museum

The best museum in Nepal for understanding the Himalaya and its peoples

A large, well-curated museum a couple of kilometres south of the lake, dedicated to the people, geology and climbing history of the Himalayan range. Permanent galleries cover the various mountain ethnic groups (Sherpa, Gurung, Magar, Thakali), the development of mountaineering equipment, and biographical exhibits on the great Himalayan climbs.

Outside, the grounds contain a small climbing wall, a Sherpa house exhibit, and a replica of a Manaslu base camp. Allow two hours; it is genuinely interesting whether or not you are about to set off on a trek. A modest entrance fee. The museum is a 15-minute taxi ride from Lakeside.

A story
The hall of fame here lists every climber who has stood on top of an 8,000-metre peak. Tucked among the recent commercial expeditions are the original pre-oxygen attempts — including Ed Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's 1953 Everest summit and Maurice Herzog's 1950 Annapurna I climb, the first ascent of any 8,000-er, completed with two amputated feet and a bag full of frostbite stories.
