Hussaini

Upper Hunza mountain village beside the Karakoram Highway, known for its precarious suspension bridge.

Hussaini is a small village in the Gojal region of Upper Hunza, 145 km north of Gilgit and about 45 km from Aliabad in Central Hunza. The Karakoram Highway (KKH) passes to its west while the Hunza River runs to the east, at an altitude of around 2,556 metres.

The village sits in dramatic mountain scenery. Gulmit, headquarters of the Gojal tehsil, lies to the south; Ghulkin is to the southwest; Passu is in the north, with the famous Batura Glacier. The Hussaini Glacier lies to the west beneath Shisper Peak (7,611 m).

Hussaini is perhaps best known for its famously precarious suspension bridge across the Hunza River — a sequence of wooden planks strung on wire cables over a roaring gorge, frequently photographed by travellers on the KKH.

Getting There

Hussaini sits directly on the Karakoram Highway, about 145 km north of Gilgit and 45 km from Karimabad. Any KKH bus between Gilgit and Sost will pass through; flag one down at Karimabad or Aliabad and ask for Hussaini or Passu. Private jeep or shared van is the more reliable option from Karimabad — about an hour and a half each way.

The suspension bridge is a fifteen-minute walk down a track from the highway. Drivers usually wait at the trailhead.
