Sheikhupura is an industrial city in Punjab, about 35 kilometres northwest of Lahore. Most travellers pass through rather than linger, but the city holds one genuine attraction: Hiran Minar, a Mughal-era hunting reserve built by Emperor Jahangir in the early 17th century to honour his favourite pet antelope, Mansraj. The complex includes a minaret, a tank, and a pavilion set in landscaped grounds — it is on Pakistan's tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status.
The old Sheikhupura Fort, also Mughal-era, sits in the centre of town. It is less well maintained than the hunting reserve but worth a look if you are already there. Beyond these two sites, there is not much to detain a visitor — the city is industrial and sprawling, and most people base themselves in Lahore and visit Hiran Minar as a half-day trip.
