Butkara Stupa

The Butkara Stupa sits in a small archaeological park on the outskirts of Mingora and is the most important Buddhist site in the Swat Valley. Originally built in the 2nd century BC, it was rebuilt repeatedly until the 10th century AD, when Buddhism faded from the region. Italian archaeologists led the modern excavations from the 1950s onward.

Walking through the site you see the central great stupa surrounded by smaller votive stupas, columns, and the bases of sculpted Gandhara panels. Most of the best statuary has been moved to the Swat Museum nearby, but the layout, scale, and quiet setting make this a worthwhile stop in its own right. Entry is free and a caretaker can usually be found to show you around.

A story
Excavation of the Butkara Stupa revealed five concentric stupas built one inside the next, each enlarging the structure as it was successively rebuilt over five hundred years — the kind of layered Buddhist devotion that makes Swat unique.
