Swat Museum

The Swat Museum, on the road between Saidu Sharif and Mingora, was rebuilt after the original 1970s building was damaged in the 2008 insurgency. It reopened in 2014 with modern displays and new acquisitions, and houses the best collection of Gandhara art accessible in the valley.

The collection focuses on stone reliefs and statuary from Butkara, Saidu Sharif, Marjanai, and other sites across Swat — scenes from the life of the Buddha, bodhisattvas, and donor figures rendered in the Greek-influenced Gandhara style. There is also an ethnographic gallery on the Yousafzai Pashtuns and the valley's traditional crafts.

A story
The museum holds one of the finest concentrations of Gandhara sculpture anywhere — works produced in Swat between the 1st and 7th centuries when Greek artistic technique, brought east by Alexander's heirs, met Indian Buddhist iconography to create the standard image of the Buddha.
