Aklan Freedom Shrine

Address Andagao, Kalibo, Aklan
Admission Free

The simple cement monument and small mausoleum on Andagao Road commemorates the nineteen martyrs of Aklan — local revolutionaries executed by Spanish authorities in March 1897 during the final months of Spanish rule in the Philippines. Their names are listed on the front; the urns containing their remains are kept inside the closed mausoleum behind.

It takes ten minutes to see and is worth the small detour from the centre on the way to or from the airport. The grounds are quietly maintained and there is rarely anyone else there. Pair with the small Museo it Akean in the old provincial capitol building on Veterans Avenue, two blocks east, which fills in the historical context.

A story
Nineteen Aklanon revolutionaries were executed by Spanish colonial authorities in March 1897, beheaded in batches over several days under the orders of Governor-General Fernando Primo de Rivera. The Spanish hoped public executions would quell the Katipunan uprising on Panay; they did the opposite. The shrine's name in Aklanon, Pook ni Patiang, means 'the place where they died'.
