Kalibo Cathedral (Santo Niño Shrine)

Address Pastrana Park, Kalibo, Aklan
Opening Hours Daily 05:00–20:00

The cathedral on the south side of Pastrana Park is the heart of Kalibo, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist but functioning effectively as the shrine of the Santo Niño de Kalibo, the small Christ-child image at the centre of the Ati-Atihan festival. The current structure was completed in the 1970s after a fire destroyed the older Spanish church; the architecture is plain but the interior is calm and the daily masses are well attended.

The Santo Niño chapel is on the north side of the nave. Pilgrims queue to touch the glass case and place handwritten petitions in the alcove beneath. Outside festival season the church is rarely crowded; during Ati-Atihan it is the focal point of the entire town. Shoes can stay on; modest dress required.

A story
The original image of the Santo Niño de Kalibo is small — about 30 cm — and is said to have been given by Ferdinand Magellan's expedition to local datus in the 1560s as part of the same diplomatic exchange that left the famous Santo Niño de Cebu. Whether this is literally true or not, the image has been worshipped here for nearly five hundred years.
