Kalibo Public Market

Opening Hours Daily 05:00–19:00; busiest 06:00–10:00

The wet market three blocks south of Pastrana Park is the unfiltered version of provincial Philippines: live chickens in stacked bamboo cages, fresh tuna landed that morning at the small port, durian and lanzones in season, mountains of dried fish strung on rattan, and the smell of every one of these things at once.

Come hungry. Sopas and lugaw (rice porridge) breakfasts at the food stalls cost ₱40–60 and are excellent. The dry-goods section at the back has the local woven baskets and bamboo kitchen tools that are still made by hand in the surrounding villages. Best in the morning; by mid-afternoon the place starts to wind down.
