Iligan sits on the north coast of Mindanao, west of Cagayan de Oro City, where the land rises quickly from Iligan Bay into limestone hills and river valleys. The city is industrial in places, but its travel identity is simple and strong: waterfalls.
Iligan calls itself the City of Majestic Waterfalls, and for once the slogan is not empty. Maria Cristina Falls is the famous one, a high Agus River drop tied to Mindanao's hydroelectric power. Tinago Falls is the more beautiful swim, hidden below a long stairway in a green ravine. Mimbalot Falls is smaller and easier to reach, while Timoga Spring Pools give you a cold-water break between falls.
This makes Iligan a strong day or overnight stop if you are already travelling through Northern Mindanao. It is not a polished resort city, and access to some falls can change with weather, maintenance, or power-plant rules. But for travelers who like water, short hikes, and local public-transport puzzles, it has enough substance to justify the detour.
