Daku Balay

Daku Balay (Big House) is the ancestral home of Don Generoso Villanueva on Burgos Street in central Bacolod, one of the surviving examples of the grand bahay na bato ("stone house") style of Filipino colonial architecture. The building combines Spanish colonial and indigenous design — massive stone lower floors, wooden upper storey with broad windows, and covered verandas facing the street.

The house is a reminder that Bacolod's wealth during the sugar era produced a merchant and planter class that built on a comparable scale to the sugar barons of Louisiana or Cuba. Entry may require arranging access through the family; the exterior is visible from the street and worth a look on any walk through the older part of central Bacolod.

A story
"Daku Balay" simply means "Big House" in Hiligaynon, the local language. The Villanueva family built it at the height of the sugar era, and the scale of the construction reflects the extraordinary wealth that sugar cultivation generated for Negros Occidental's landed elite in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
