Sogod Bay, the large body of water southeast of Maasin, is one of the best diving destinations in the Philippines. The bay is deep — up to 500 metres — and the combination of deep water close to shore, strong current systems, and healthy coral cover creates exceptional conditions for large pelagic species. Whale sharks (locally called butanding) are present year-round near Padre Burgos and Pintuyan, roughly an hour's drive south of Maasin. Thresher sharks are regularly sighted in the deeper channels.
Several dive shops operate out of the resorts around Padre Burgos and Pintuyan, running daily trips to the major dive sites. The sites are diveable for most experience levels, though some of the deeper walls and current-swept channels are best suited to experienced divers. Snorkelling over the shallower reef areas is also worthwhile. Maasin City functions as the nearest city with ferry connections, banking, and proper accommodation before heading to the dive resorts further south.
