When to Go

Southern Leyte has a relatively even rainfall pattern compared to much of the Philippines, but the dry season from November through May is generally the best time to visit. January to May is prime season for whale shark watching in Sogod Bay — sightings are most reliable during this period, particularly around Pintuyan and Padre Burgos south of Maasin.

Diving in Sogod Bay is good year-round, but visibility and sea conditions are best from November to May. The wet season (June to October) brings more rain and rougher seas, which can affect ferry schedules and diving trips. Typhoons occasionally track through the Eastern Visayas, most commonly between July and November.

Maasin City itself is a working town with no particular festival season for tourists, though the fiesta of St. Michael the Archangel (patron of the cathedral) is celebrated in late September. Holy Week draws large crowds to the cathedral.
