Maasin Cathedral

Maasin Cathedral — officially the National Shrine and Cathedral Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption — is the most prominent building in the city and one of the oldest churches in Southern Leyte. The baroque stone façade overlooks a palm-shaded plaza at the centre of town, and the interior, with its high arched ceiling and ornate retablo, is cool and peaceful even on the hottest days.

The church is an active parish and diocesan cathedral, and Mass is celebrated several times daily. Visitors are welcome outside service times. The plaza in front of the cathedral is a good place to sit and watch the rhythms of Filipino provincial town life — school groups, market vendors, and tricycle drivers circling the square.

A story
The cathedral was first established by Augustinian friars in the 1600s and has been rebuilt several times after typhoon damage and wartime destruction. The current baroque façade dates from the 19th century. During World War II, the church served as a refuge for civilian families hiding from Japanese forces — the thick stone walls offered protection that the surrounding wooden buildings could not.
