Al Shahaniya Camel Racing Track

The Al Shahaniya camel racing track is about 45 km west of Doha and holds regular races from October to March, typically on Thursday and Friday mornings from around 7am. Entry is free. The track is a long oval and races happen in quick succession — twenty minutes or so apart — as owners bring their animals in for training runs as well as competitive events.

The atmosphere is relaxed and local: Qatari families and their drivers, large SUVs parked along the rail, herds of camels in the holding pens. There is a covered grandstand but most spectators watch from their cars along the track's inner rim. Getting there requires a taxi or rental car; no public transport reaches the track. The best races are on the final Fridays of the season in February and March.

A story
Qatar replaced child jockeys with robot jockeys in 2004, following international pressure over the use of small children — some as young as three — in camel racing. The robots are attached to the camel's back and controlled by radio from an owner's car driving alongside the track. Watching a line of camels run past, each carrying a small mechanical figure waving a crop controlled by a handler following in an SUV, is one of the more genuinely surreal spectacles available in the Gulf.
