Al Khor Zoo

Qatar's main zoo is located in Al Khor, about 50 km north of Doha — not, as sometimes described, immediately outside the capital. It covers 42 acres and holds over 1,500 animals including the Arabian Oryx, Qatar's national animal, which was hunted to extinction in the wild in 1972. The zoo participates in reintroduction programmes for the species.

The zoo is more interesting for the Oryx than for the overall experience, which is a fairly standard mid-range zoo by international standards. There is a small amusement park section popular with families. Worth combining with a visit to the Al Thakira mangroves nearby if you are making the drive to Al Khor.
