Khalifa International Stadium

Khalifa International Stadium is Qatar's oldest major stadium, originally built in 1976 and completely rebuilt for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. It has a capacity of around 45,000 and served as one of the main venues for the tournament, hosting matches through to the quarter-finals. The swooping twin arches that frame the roof have become one of Doha's recognisable shapes.

Stadium tours are available on non-match days, covering the pitch, dressing rooms, and a section on the air-conditioning technology that solved the summer heat problem. Located at the heart of Aspire Zone, adjacent to the Olympic and Sports Museum and Aspire Tower.

A story
Khalifa was the first stadium in the world to be air-conditioned for outdoor use. Qatar developed a system of chilled-air nozzles embedded beneath the seats that keeps the playing surface at around 20°C even when the outside temperature is 40°C. The technology was partly intended to demonstrate that a Gulf summer World Cup was viable; it became one of the central arguments in Qatar's bid.
