Lamp Bear at Hamad International Airport

Hamad International Airport's most discussed artwork is a 23-foot yellow bear holding an oversized lamp, by Swiss artist Urs Fischer. The work stands in the central terminal area and has become an unexpected landmark for the millions of transit passengers passing through Doha's airport each year.

Hamad International is consistently ranked among the world's best airports and has a notable collection of public art, several good restaurants, a swimming pool (in the transit hotel), and shops ranging from duty-free to genuine luxury. For long layovers, the airport is one of the more comfortable places to wait in the world.

A story
Urs Fischer's yellow bear holding a lamp was installed in the airport's main terminal in 2014 as part of Qatar Museums' public art programme. Fischer — a Swiss artist based in New York — made the bear 23 feet tall in cast bronze, painted yellow. Airport authorities have reported it confuses some arriving passengers who believe it to be a children's feature rather than a major contemporary artwork that sold at auction for over $20 million in 2022.
