Asia > South Korea > Changwon
Changwon is easy to underestimate because the name now covers several different places: planned Changwon, old port-city Masan, and naval Jinhae. Together they make a worthwhile day or overnight stop between Busan, Daegu, and the south coast.
In spring, Jinhae is the star. Yeojwacheon Stream and Gyeonghwa Station are among Korea's best-known cherry blossom scenes, and they are busy for good reason. Outside blossom season, the city still has Junam Reservoir, one of the country's better bird-watching wetlands.
Masan gives Changwon its food-and-port character. Masan Fish Market is loud, practical, and more memorable than the newer administrative city centre. Come with a clear plan, because Changwon is spread out and its best pieces are not all near each other.
