Asia > South Korea > Danyang
Danyang is a small resort town in inland South Korea, tucked between the Namhan River, limestone hills, and the edge of Sobaeksan country. Koreans come for caves, river views, autumn hillsides, and the Danyang Palgyeong, the "Eight Scenic Views" that give the county its local fame.
The modern town is newer than it looks. Much of old Danyang disappeared under the waters of Chungju Lake in the 1980s, leaving today's town to grow as a practical base for sightseeing. The result is a place that is easy to use: bus station, market, riverfront, and bridges all close together, with caves and viewpoints a short ride away.
Danyang is especially good if you like active days. You can climb through Gosu Cave, walk riverside trails, go paragliding above the valley, and still be back in town for garlic-heavy market food by evening.
