Hwaryeongjeon Shrine

Royal portrait shrine beside Hwaseong Haenggung, built to honour King Jeongjo

Hwaryeongjeon Shrine sits beside Hwaseong Haenggung and was built in 1801 to enshrine a portrait of King Jeongjo. That makes it a more personal royal site than the fortress walls: a place of remembrance for the king whose filial devotion and political ambition shaped Suwon.

It is easy to miss if you are focused on walking the ramparts, but it adds useful depth to the Hwaseong visit. Stop here before or after the temporary palace and the story of Jeongjo, his father Crown Prince Sado, and the planned royal city becomes much clearer.
