The Hwaseong Fortress walls are the dominant attraction — a two-hour walk circuits the nearly 6-kilometre perimeter, passing watchtowers, command posts, and the major gates. Start at the Paldalmun (South Gate) near the city centre and walk clockwise. The Hwaseong Haenggung palace complex inside the walls adds another hour.
The old market street near the fortress (Paldalmun Market) is one of the better traditional markets in the Seoul metropolitan area — best visited in the morning when the food stalls are in full operation. For those who want to end with something odd, Mr Toilet House is a genuine curiosity about 3 kilometres from the fortress.
