The Mr Toilet House is exactly what it sounds like: a museum of global sanitation history housed in a building shaped like a toilet bowl, situated in a residential neighbourhood of Suwon. The structure was built in 2007 by Sim Jae-duck, the former mayor of Suwon who spent much of his career advocating for better public sanitation in South Korea and globally. He named himself "Mr Toilet" as part of this campaign and built the house to publicise the World Toilet Summit he organised.
The museum inside covers the history of toilets, hygiene practices, and sanitation infrastructure across cultures and periods — a subject that turns out to be considerably more interesting than the whimsy of the building suggests. The garden contains sculptures of people in various toilet-related poses. The house became briefly famous globally after photos of it circulated online, and it draws visitors who make the detour specifically for its weirdness. It is about 3 kilometres northeast of the Hwaseong Fortress walls, accessible by bus or taxi from Suwon Station.
