Paldalmun is the southern gate of Hwaseong Fortress, built in the 1790s when King Jeongjo remade Suwon as a planned walled city. The fortress wall no longer connects cleanly to the gate here, so Paldalmun now stands like a stone-and-timber island in a busy traffic circle, with buses and shopfronts pressing close around a piece of Joseon military architecture.
It is worth seeing because that odd setting tells you a lot about Suwon: royal ambition, colonial-era disruption, postwar growth, and everyday city life all meet in one view. Come while walking the Hwaseong circuit or after visiting the nearby palace, then step back far enough to take in the double-roofed pavilion and the heavy arched base without trying to cross traffic where you should not.
