Getting Around

Taipei has one of the best public transport systems in Asia. The MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) is clean, cheap, air-conditioned, and reaches nearly everywhere a visitor wants to go — five main lines and several branches cover the city and its suburbs. Buy a rechargeable EasyCard at any station on arrival; it works on the MRT, buses, the airport express, and most convenience stores. Buses fill in the gaps to places the MRT does not reach (notably Yangmingshan National Park) and are also covered by the EasyCard. Taxis and Uber are plentiful and cheap by international standards. YouBike is the city's bike-share scheme, with docks every few hundred metres and an excellent network of riverside bike paths. Walking is easy and pleasant; most sidewalks are wide and shaded by covered arcades.
