Shopping in Taipei is concentrated in three main areas. The Xinyi District around Taipei 101 is the upscale international shopping zone, with a cluster of department stores (Mitsukoshi, Shin Kong, Breeze Center) and the luxury mall at the base of 101 itself. Zhongxiao Fuxing and the East District are the mid-market fashion and café strip, with Japanese chains and independent boutiques. Ximending, west of the station, is Taipei's teenage fashion district — a pedestrianised grid of streets that feels a bit like Harajuku in Tokyo, with small shops selling streetwear, K-pop merch, and cheap accessories. For something more traditional, the covered Dihua Street in the old town is the place for Chinese medicinal herbs, dried mushrooms, tea, ceramics and calligraphy supplies, especially lively in the week before Lunar New Year when it transforms into an enormous snack and gift market.
