Raohe Street Night Market

Compact, atmospheric night market with the famous pepper buns

Raohe is the more compact and arguably more interesting of Taipei's central night markets — a single 600-metre pedestrianised strip in Songshan, anchored at the western end by the elaborate Songshan Ciyou Temple. The market entrance is dramatic: a gilded gate beside the temple, with food stalls and queues spilling out into the night.

The signature snack is the pepper bun at the Fuzhou Shizu Hujiao Bing stall just inside the entrance — beef and scallions in a peppery bun crisped against the wall of a tandoor-style oven. Queue early: the queue regularly stretches the length of the market. Other stalls of note serve smoked duck, oyster omelettes, lemon aiyu jelly, papaya milk, and stinky tofu. MRT Songshan station is 100m from the western gate.
