Taipei Grand Mosque

Taiwan's largest mosque, a 1960s landmark in the Da'an district

The Taipei Grand Mosque, completed in 1960 on Xinsheng South Road in the Da'an district, is the largest and most important mosque in Taiwan. Built with support from the government during the Cold War to serve the Muslim community and visiting dignitaries from Muslim countries, its dome and minarets are an unexpected sight among the apartment blocks and tree-lined avenues of central Taipei.

The building, designed by the architect Yang Cho-cheng, follows a broadly Middle Eastern plan with a 15-metre dome and twin 20-metre minarets. It remains an active place of worship, serving Taipei's growing Muslim population, including a large number of Indonesian workers, and is busiest at Friday prayers and during Ramadan. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times; dress modestly and remove shoes before entering the prayer hall.
