Taitung is Taiwan's east-coast city for travellers who want the island to slow down. It sits between mountains and the Pacific, far from the dense west-coast corridor, with a stronger Indigenous presence, cleaner air, and a more relaxed rhythm than Taipei, Tainan, or Kaohsiung.
The city is not packed with grand monuments, but it has a good spare-day shape. Taitung Forest Park and Seashore Park make a green-and-blue edge for cycling or walking. The National Museum of Prehistory and Beinan Site Park explain why this corner matters far beyond its present size. In the evening, the old-station area around Fantasy Tiehua and Zhengqi Road gives the centre some easy energy.
Taitung is also a useful base for the wider county: the East Rift Valley, Luye Highland, the coast road toward Sanxiantai, Green Island, and Orchid Island all pull travellers outward. Still, the city itself is worth a day before you move on. It is one of Taiwan's better places to feel the Pacific side of the island rather than just pass through it.
